The Texas Suit
Unavailable $12,000.00
The Texas Suit is a ready-to-wear western suit that was designed and embroidered by Christina Hurt Smith for Fort Lonesome's Haus of Shiny Shit art show that was held at Preacher Gallery in Austin, Texas in February of 2020.
The Texas Suit celebrates the natural beauty of the Lone Star State. The imagery on the suit includes: ocelots, bluebonnets, Guadalupe bass, prickly pear, mockingbirds, sundance flowers, longhorns, copperhead snakes, roseate spoonbills, jackrabbits, yucca, a century plant and an armadillo, and a banner with the word "Friendship", Texas' state motto. One of the more personal elements of this suit is the inclusion of Texas wild rice, which you see on the lower portion of the suit pants. Texas wild rice is a perennial grass that roots underwater in the river bed and only exists in the upper two miles of the San Marcos River in San Marcos, Texas - the place designer Christina Hurt Smith calls home. Constructed of silk wool, this suit is a rich, red color with a slight sheen. All of the western piping detail is done in a contrasting, muted gold silk wool. Surrounding all of the imagery are gold rhinestones that are each hand-set, one rhinestone at a time.
This suit is one of the most detailed pieces to come from Fort Lonesome. All of the embroidery on this suit was done one thread color at a time using a late 1800's Singer chainstitch embroidery machine. The spines of the prickly pear cactus were added by hand after the pads were embroidered.
A true one-of-a-kind piece, this suit is the only one available and this design will never be produced again.
A note from the designer:
"The Texas Suit is the piece that I can confidently say that I am most proud of thus far in my career. This suit was born out of the first time that I had the chance to design a suit that was not a custom piece. What was created was an homage to home and a celebration of the biodiversity of this state. It's a rare opportunity to get to spend as much time and energy on a single piece as I did with this one, which is probably why I have grown such deep attachment and love for it. I look forward to this piece finding its way to the person who finds that same attachment and love." - Christina Hurt Smith
